When the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance name was established in late 2006 with more than 30 members already on board, the name change symbolized their enhanced mission statement that now includes a focus on specialty retail advocacy. Peak Sports, based in the small town of Corvallis, Ore., fully embodies what Grassroots Outdoor Alliance is all about: supporting locally and independently owned outdoor retail stores, which is a perfect example of the well-used phrase, “buy local.”
Peak Sports has been an independently owned and operated outdoor store and bike shop in Corvallis, Ore. since 1971. With three different outdoor specialty stores within a half of a block from one another, Peak Sports offers something to every type of outdoor enthusiast. The Peak Sports family of shops includes outdoor stores specializing in backpacking, climbing, adventure travel, water sports and winter sports, including skiing and snowshoeing.
“I am excited to have a new member in the Northwest and Peak Sports is a great example of the kind of retailer we are looking for in new members,” said David Matz of Grassroots Outdoor Alliance. “Jeff Katz, owner of Peak Sports, brings a myriad of experiences to the table from buying-group knowledge to retail metrics expertise, and we look forward to his intellectual contributions to the group.”
“Here at Peak Sports, we have always been focused on the eco-friendly aspect of running a business, which has become industry standard and includes steps to reduce our carbon footprint, and also to increase our recycling efforts and our use of recycled materials,” said Jeff Katz, owner of Peak Sports. “Teaming up with the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance gives us that extra fire power to further our efforts to boost environmental awareness, and to help us do our part to be a transparent and environmentally sound business.”
