Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) announced that the OIA Sustainability Working Group (SWG) was presented with the 2013 Green Supply Chain Award, which recognizes companies making green or sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy.

Issued by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine, this award spotlights the different sustainable approaches that global businesses take to cut costs, save time, drive revenue and improve their carbon footprint in the areas of product lifecycle management (PLM), order demand capture, sourcing, technology & integration infrastructure, procurement and other areas of the supply chain.

“Since 2007, the outdoor industry has worked collaboratively to address shared sustainability challenges within the industry supply chain,” said Beth Jensen, director of corporate responsibility at Outdoor Industry Association. “This award is a testament to the collaborative process of the SWG that has enabled competitive companies to work together to address shared sustainability challenges within the supply chain. This process has yielded numerous tools to help increase responsible supply chain management within the outdoor industry.”

Since forming in 2007, the OIA SWG has developed a number of tools and resources to help companies benchmark and measure their environmental footprint, identify areas for improvement, and make informed sourcing and product lifecycle decisions.

The Eco Index, the first tool developed by the OIA SWG, was the basis for the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Index, an indicator-based tool that enables companies to evaluate material types, products, facilities and processes based on a range of environmental and product design choices. The OIA SWG continues to work closely with the SAC and is still actively involved in the development of the Higg Index through its other issue-specific working groups, which include: Materials Traceability, Chemicals Management, Index Development, and Social Responsibility.
