Outdoor adventurer and writer Michael J. Ybarra, who contributed regularly to the Wall Street Journal, died last weekend while climbing solo in the Sierra Nevada.

Ybarra, 45, apparently fell in the Sawtooth Ridge area near Yosemite National Park during a recreational trip. Ybarra had contributed at least 22 articles to the Wall Street Journal since 2010, including book reviews and dispatches about his personal adventures in Patagonia and Nepal as well as pieces on cycling and paddling.

He is survived by his sister and fellow climber Suzanne Ybarra.
