U.S. consumers are poised to spend a record $24 billion on Father’s Day 2025, up from $22.4 billion in 2024, surpassing the prior record of $22.9 billion set in 2023, that’s according to an annual survey conducted by the National Retail Federation.
“Americans are embracing meaningful traditions and holidays, and this Father’s Day, spending on gifts and other holiday items is expected to reach record levels,” NRF VP of Industry and Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen stated in a media release. “As consumers look to recognize the father figures in their lives, retailers are prepared with gift ideas, special deals and convenient shopping options to help customers find the right gifts.”
According to the NRF survey, 48 percent of consumers plan to buy a gift for a father or stepfather, followed by a husband (25 percent), son (12 percent), brother (9 percent), friend (8 percent), or grandfather (6 percent).
Over three-quarters of surveyed respondents (76 percent) plan to celebrate Father’s Day, spending an average of $199.38 per person, up nearly $10 from last year’s $189.81.
Surveyed respondents aged 35 to 44 tend to spend the most, on average, $278.90, and will also spend significantly more compared with last year, increasing their spending by $27 on average.
Among other survey findings:
- 46 percent of respondents said it is Most Important when looking for a Father’s Day gift to find something that is unique or different, with 37 percent of respondents stating the gift should create a special memory.
- 58 percent of respondents plan to buy a greeting card, followed by clothing (55 percent), a special outing (53 percent), and gift cards (50 percent).
- 43 percent of respondents plan to gift a subscription box, up from 34 percent when the NRF first asked the question in 2019. Thirty percent of respondents plan to gift an experience, up from 23 percent in 2019.
- 41 percent of surveyed respondents plan to shop online, 35 percent at department stores, 23 percent at discount stores, 22 percent at specialty stores, and 19 percent at local or small businesses.
“As consumers prioritize Father’s Day gifts that are unique or create special memories, categories such as special outings and personal care items have seen an increase in popularity this year,” said Phil Rist, executive vice president of Strategy at Prosper Insights & Analytics, which conducted the survey. “A special outing offers an opportunity to create new memories and celebrate together, while a personal care item allows dad to feel pampered.”
The survey of 8,225 consumers was conducted from May 1 to May 7, 2025.
