Overall, November 2008 ended up warmer than normal, with the warmth particularly pronounced in the West, according to Planalytics Inc., which helps companies antcipate the impact of weather on their business. Repeating shots of cold arctic air invaded the Eastern half of North America from the middle of the month, helping offset subdued demand for winter merchandise that was experienced in the beginning of November due to warmer temperatures.

November 2008 was also warmer than November 2007 and, as a result, 67% of the publicly traded companies tracked by Planalytics came in with negative year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the month. Among the companies showing the least favorable weather comparisons were Zumiez and Nordstrom. Among the companies showing the most favorable weather comparisons were Stage Stores and California Pizza Kitchen.

Planalytics reported positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the following product categories: Firelogs (+17%), Scarves/Hats/Gloves (+5%), Humidifiers (+3%) and Athletic Wear (+2%).

“While consumers and businesses continue to struggle in this difficult environment, the weather sustained the trend of need-based purchases of true must-have items right through the kickoff of the holiday season,” said Fred Fox, Planalytics' President & CEO.
