You have one week to get Nike’s self-lacing shoes…if you’re lucky.
Nike’s much-hyped, limited edition self-lacing sneakers are being released this month via raffle drawing. Only 89 pairs were made for distribution. On October 4, 2016, the raffle opened, with tickets purchasable on nike.com/mag and the Nike+ app.
Rewinding for a minute, the self-lacing Nike Mag shoes are based on the Back to the Future kicks worn by Michael J. Fox in the cult classic film. Nike collaborated with The Michael J. Fox Foundation on the 2016 product to raise awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
This is not the first time the swoosh has partnered with this Foundation. Back in 2011, an initial version of the Mag was created for auction, raising close to $10 million in 10 days — all of which went to Parkinson’s research.
The first wearable pair was given to Michael J. Fox in 2015.
“Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the Nike Mag unlocked something much bigger at Nike,” said Mark Parker, chairman, president and CEO, Nike Inc. “It sent us down an uncharted path of innovation, but it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world’s biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s.”

The Mag’s self-lacing concept draws from a former adaptive footwear technology used by the swoosh called HyperAdapt 1.0. This technology was designed so shoes automatically lace and fit to the unique shape of each wearer’s foot. The evolution of HyperAdapt 1.0 is being called AdaptiveFit in the 2016 Mag.
The vast majority of the 89 pairs being raffled will be available to residents of the U.S. and Canada, through a digital drawing process. Raffles can be bought for $10 through October 11 and the winners will be notified October 17.
