NFL to Lay Off 14% of Staff

The National Football League will lay off almost 14% of its staff to cut costs.  The move will eliminate about 150 jobs over the next 60 days, not including jobs eliminated by individual teams.

The NFL employs 1,100 people in three locations: league headquarters in New York, NFL Films production facilities in Mt. Laurel, NJ, and the NFL Network and NFL.com production facilities in Los Angeles.
The report follows an announcement by the NBA in mid-October that it was laying off 9% of its workforce due to a weakening economy and declining season tickets sales. That translated to about 80 jobs, according to media reports at the time.

In related news, the Arena Football League  is now considering a possible suspension of its 2009 season. The league’s board of directors recently voted not to suspend the season and said it will continue to meet to discuss any and all long-term structural improvement options for the AFL.  The AFL season takes place from March to June.
