Dr. Sheila Summers has been hired as the education director of the National Ski Patrol (NSP). Dr. Summers will begin working for NSP in the Lakewood office on March 24, 2015.
“I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Summers has accepted the position of director of education,” said NSP Executive Director John McMahon. “As a professional educator and administrator, she has the background to elevate NSP's education programs to a new level.”
Summers most recently served as the associate vice president for curriculum and academic effectiveness at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she oversaw master's program development, program assessment, accreditation, program review, and faculty development. While at Metro State, she also served as the director of student learning assessment.
“Thanks to the Education Director Search Committee chaired by board member David Walker, we now have an outstanding individual in the national office to manage NSP's education programs,” said NSP board chair Ed McNamara. “It is my pleasure to welcome Sheila Summers to our organization. According to the committee members and staff that I have spoken with, Sheila was an exceptional candidate and is now a welcome addition to our team.”
Dr. Summers currently serves as an adjunct instructor for the University of Denver's University College, and has several publications to her credit, including Developing an Assessment Plan for a Professional Program: A Collaborative Success, and Fostering Problem-Solving Skills: A Glimpse at the Reflective Judgment Model.
“I am thrilled to accept the position of education director at the NSP,” said Summers. “I am impressed with the dedication of the staff and incredible commitment of the volunteers I met to serving snow sports participants and keeping them safe. I believe that together, we can continue to provide high-quality education programs and seek opportunities for innovation using the most up-to-date research on learning and 21st-century technologies.”
A search committee was set up by NSP to help find the new education director; the committee included NSP board members David Walker and Janet Glaeser.
“I am excited about Sheila accepting the education director position,” said Walker. “She brings an amazing amount of talent in the education field, as well as budgeting and management experience. Sheila has a great personality, is enthusiastic about joining us, and comes to us with lots of energy. It was a pleasure to interview her, and I know that she will be a good fit for our team. The National Ski Patrol is a federally chartered nonprofit membership association dedicated to serving the public and the mountain recreation industry. For 75 years, the NSP has been at the forefront of safety and emergency care education programs. The association's 28,000 members represent 98 percent of the nation's patrollers. .
