Meijer joined Walmart, Kroger and other large U.S. retailers in asking customers to not openly carry guns in their stores.

“The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, so we respectfully request that our customers do not open carry firearms at Meijer,” the retailer stated in the Tweet. “We’ve made this decision because open carry can create an environment that makes our customers and team members feel unsafe.”

Walgreens, CVS and Wegmans also started requesting that their customers not openly carry guns into their stores in states where open carry is legal after Walmart’s move.

Some retailers, including Starbucks, Target, Costco, Trader Joe’s and Panera Bread, have had policies in place regarding in-store firearms for several years.
