Mountain Equipment Co-op opened its eleventh
store, in Victoria. The store will serve 30,000 MEC members who reside in the provincial capital as well as 44,000 others who live elsewhere on Vancouver Island.

“Vancouver Island members have been waiting for an MEC store to call
their own for many years, and we are delighted to give them one,” said Chair
Linda Bartlett.

CEO Peter Robinson said, “MEC stores are a testament to our values, and
the Victoria store is no exception. From the product selection to the green
building features to the staff who will serve them, members are in for a great
experience.”

Located at 1450 Government Street in the heart of Victoria's historic
downtown, the 15,000-square-foot store occupies the main floor of a registered
heritage structure, the Vogue Building.

An extensive renovation included such green building upgrades as
high-efficiency lighting, heating and ventilation systems. The store is
estimated to use 36% less energy than conventional buildings.

“People are the heart of any business, and I'm extremely impressed and
proud of how our staff have brought the store to life,” said store manager
Dave Rayner. “They are keen to get on with the work of serving our members.”

Working in a mix of part-time and full-time positions, approximately
fifty people are employed at the store.
