The 52-year-old Masback, a former U.S. indoor mile champion, had led the sport's U.S. governing body for the past 10 years, the USATF said in a statement. Nike is a major USATF sponsor.
USATF overcame financial difficulties and increased athletes' programs and sponsorships under Masback's leadership while dealing with the impact of the BALCO doping scandal.

The USATF board of directors has already begun interviewing executive search firms to find Masbacks replacement. USATF President Bill Roe said he will appoint five to seven people from within the organization or the sport to assist the executive search firm. He hopes to have both the firm and the panel in place by mid-February, but set no deadline for hiring a new CEO.
