Lowa Boots has announced that they will sponsor the Hari Berger Speed Climbing Competition at the 2013 Ouray Ice Festival to honor the legendary climber who won three Ice Climbing World Championships while wearing Lowa boots.

Berger was an all around champion competition ice climber before he lost his life in 2006 when 150 tons of ice collapsed on him as he was climbing in Austria.  Lowa’s sponsorship of the event doubles the Festival’s cash prize opportunities.

The competition will be held on Sunday, Jan. 13 as the final event of the weekend activities with the award ceremony to immediately follow. There will be individual men’s and women’s classes, each with $2,000 in first place prizes, second place of $1,000 and $500 for the third place finishers.  Women’s prizes will be awarded by four-time World Ice Climbing Champion, Ines Papert, who has worn Lowa’s to victory numerous times over the years.

Representing the Lowa factory, Rolf Eberhard, a veteran of several Mt Everest summits, will be on hand to award the men’s prizes.

The Ouray Ice Festival is an international gathering of ice climbing competitors, gear suppliers and ice climbers of all levels of competence. Events include competitions, various climbing clinics from beginning to advanced and the opportunity to check out and try the latest gear while catching up with some of the world’s most famous and experienced climbers. Lowa will have a demo tent available for participants.
