Jockey International, Inc. announced that it will close their knitting plant in North Carolina. The plant is located in Cooleemee and employs 210 people. Jockey will cease operations at the plant by the end of March 2009. Jockey will provide severance pay, benefits continuation and job skill training assistance to all effected by the plant closing.

Edward Emma, President and Chief Operating Officer, said, “The textile operation, built in 1988, would require substantial capital investment to remain competitive,” said Emma. “Jockey will instead shift those resources into ongoing design and development initiatives while partnering with U.S. yarn suppliers and Central American fabric makers who have demonstrated the ability to make Jockey-quality fabrics in modern facilities.”

The clothing company also is closing a sewing plant in Jamaica, where 570 employees will lose their jobs.
