JackRabbit Sports, the New York City running store, has partnered with YogaWorks, and Well+Good on the debut of “Yoga for Athletes,” a free monthly class series.

“Sports-specific yoga is getting more popular,” says Lee Silverman, founder of JackRabbit Sports, New York City's venue for running, biking and swimming gear and apparel. “We wanted to offer our customers regular in-store yoga where they could enjoy an athletic practice that targeted their unique concerns and challenges.”

JackRabbit turned to the wellness experts at Well+Good (www.WellandGoodNYC.com) to help them create and launch this free monthly series.

“We collaborated with JackRabbit Sports on a very successful Yoga for Runners class following the NYC Marathon,” says Well+Good co-founder Alexia Brue. “Launching a monthly yoga series geared toward athletes seemed like a natural next step.” Well+Good tapped YogaWorks, with five studios in NYC, to be the series’ yoga partner and sponsor.

“Yoga is a natural complement for any kind of athletic training-it opens up and lengthens overused muscles, releases lactic acid, and protects joints and increases range of motion,” says Alie Carey, a YogaWorks' instructor, runner, and former Lacrosse player, who will be teaching the series.

“Partnering with different businesses in the community helps us reach a lot of people who might never otherwise step foot in a yoga studio,” says Caitlin Culp, a grassroots marketing coordinator at YogaWorks. “People are realizing now that yoga can complement so many different practices and sports and lifestyles; offering it through our partners is a great way to adapt it for specific communities.”

The series debuts February 12, 2011, at Jack Rabbit's 14th Street location in New York City and will be held on the second Saturday of every month. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m., prior to the store opening, so participants can enjoy a quiet, focused practice.
