Jim Hauptman is stepping down as design director at Maine-based outdoor specialty retailer L.L.Bean to launch a new product design/marketing consultancy, in Portland, ME.

Hauptman sold his advertising agency, Hauptman & Partners, in 2001 to join L.L.Bean as its catalog/web creative director and managing editor, and served in that capacity for six years. In 2007 he was named design director responsible for all L.L.Bean product categories – Men’s, Women’s, Kids, Home, Footwear, Travel, Outerwear and Outdoor Equipment. “It’s been a great experience,” says Hauptman. “To spend ten years learning and growing in a venerable brand such as L.L.Bean has been an incredible opportunity – and I am grateful.”

Hauptman’s new endeavor, Blaze, aims to help companies identify opportunities in the areas of product design, marketing and customer advocacy. “Consumers today are seeking authentic experiences and simplicity in their lives,” says Hauptman. “They’re drawn to brands that offer a thoughtfully defined product assortment, a compelling story, and a sincere commitment to deliver on what they promise. It’s at this intersection that I’ve spent the vast majority of my professional career, and where I hope Blaze can guide others.”

Hauptman will continue to serve as an internal consultant to L.L.Bean as he wraps up his duties over the next several months.
