After five decades serving shoppers on Michigan Avenue, Hanig’s Footwear is closing its flagship store.
The shoe store will close near the end of September or the beginning of October, owner Peter Hanig told the Chicago Sun-Times. The retailer’s Wilmette location, located at 1181 Wilmette Avenue, will remain open, as will its e-commerce website.
“Small businesses are no longer viable on Michigan Avenue,” Hanig told the news outlet.
“I’m sad about it,” Hanig said of the store closing. “This has been a major part of my life for a long time. We had an incredible time. We met so many people over the years as a result of it, and we were very lucky to be there.”
The Michigan Avenue store first opened in 1978 at the former John Hancock Center, located at 875 N. Michigan Avenue.
