GU Energy Labs, creators of the original energy gel, are pleased to be the recipient of an annual award from the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) denoting top bike-friendly businesses in the area.

One of three winners in 2013 — in the small business category — GU Energy caught the attention of the EBBC because of its wide range of bicycle-friendly initiatives.

We certainly dont have these policies in place to win awards, noted GU Energy CEO Brian Vaughan.  But the recognition is meaningful, because we hope it will inspire other companies to follow suit.  The measures weve enacted increase productivity, help the community, decrease traffic and lead to a healthier workplace.

GUs cycling-focused policies include a bike storage room, two stationary trainers on-site, subsidized bike repair, lockers and showers and frequent group rides.  Further, the company incentivizes bike commuting through a comprehensive program that rewards participants with cash and paid time off.

The EBBC noted, As a sports nutrition company based in West Berkeley, GU staff is comprised of athletes of all kinds…(and) promoting a healthy, active lifestyle is a central theme of GUs business model.
