As part of its national expansion plan, multi-channel retailer Golfsmith International Inc. has announced the acquisition of San Francisco-based Don Sherwood Golf and Tennis World. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

With stores in Dublin, Fremont, Palo Alto, San Francisco, San Jose and Walnut Creek, Don Sherwood is among the largest and most recognized golf and tennis retailers in the Bay Area. The six-store acquisition marks Golfsmith's introduction to Northern California and increases its retail footprint to 35 stores nationwide. Golfsmith and Don Sherwood bring Bay Area consumers more than 70 years of combined retail experience.

“By acquiring a leading retailer in a top golf market like the San Francisco Bay Area, Golfsmith continues to deliver on its strategy of establishing a formidable presence in major markets throughout the United States,” said Jim Thompson, president and CEO of Golfsmith, a portfolio company of First Atlantic Capital. “We will build on Sherwood's strong foundation by giving Bay Area customers a wider selection of brand name merchandise, consistently responsive customer service, the entertainment-based experience of big-box retail and the added value of our specialty retail services.”

With this acquisition, the company employs more than 1,100 people. The purchase is Golfsmith's first retail acquisition in its 36-year history, and it gives the Austin-based company an immediate presence in the complementary market of tennis retail.
