Canadian golf retailer Golf Town, Inc. will establish a group of golf superstores in Massachusetts this year to mark its first expansion in the U.S, according to a recent report in The Boston Globe.
The company, which is reportedly making a $25 million investment and creating 200 new jobs in the Boston area, plans to open five stores in March and one more in the fall. The region's flagship U.S. store will open in Watertown's Arsenal Mall on March 24, with stores opening simultaneously in Avon, Bellingham, Reading, and Seekonk. The sixth store, to open in the fall, will be located in Northborough. Each store will be about 20,000 square feet or larger.
Stephen Bebis, chief executive of Golf Town, told the Globe that one of the reasons he selected Boston for Golf Town’s first U.S. venture was because it was the only market in 2010 where golf rounds were up for the year. Bebis added that the U.S. stores will have interactive features “that can’t be found at smaller retailers or stores that specialize in golf,” according to the Globe report. Bebis said his stores, because of their size, will be able to remain competitive in price and selection, and will carry a large selection of apparel.
Golf Town, based in based in Markham, Ontario, has 55 stores in Canada.
