Rounds of golf played in May jumped by 10.0 percent on a national level year-over-year and are now running up 5.5 percent for the first five months of 2023, according to Golf Datatech.

By region, in May, the most significant gain was in the Mid-Atlantic, up 21.7 percent, followed by West North Central, 18.7 percent; East North Central, 15.4 percent; Pacific, 10.3 percent; South Central, 7.1 percent; and South Atlantic, 5.8 percent. The two declining regions were Mountain, down 7.0 percent and New England, off 3.3 percent.

In the year-to-date period, by region, the Mid-Atlantic led the increase, up 25.5 percent, followed by East North Central, 20.3 percent; West North Central, 17.4 percent; South Central, 6.7 percent; and South Atlantic, 4.8 percent. Declining regions were the Pacific, down 7.0 percent; Mountain, 6.8 percent; and New England, 8.5 percent.

The pace of golf rounds played continues to normalize after surging during the earlier stages of the pandemic. Golf rounds played were down 3.7 percent in 2022, up 5.5 percent in 2021 and jumped 13.9 percent in 2020.
