Following extensive remodeling at Forzanis Sport Chek and Coast Mountain retail stores, and an aggressive advertising campaign to support the new banners, the company reported holiday season total retail system sales were up 21.1%. Excluding the recently acquired Nevada Bob's and National Sports businesses, retail system sales were still up 12.4%. On a comparable store basis, sales increased 9.6% with comparable corporate stores sales up 11.1% across all of Forzanis various banners. Franchise comparable store sales, which were performing well consistently, even before the remodeling effort, increased 7.1%.
The corporate store increases were a combination of an increase of 12.0% in Sport Chek and Coast Mountain Sports locations and a 7.8% increase in Sport Mart stores. Corporate store margins continue to increase as they did in the third quarter. According to the company, the sales and margin results were attained while keeping inventories well in line, and stores exited the holiday sales season leaner and fresher in virtually all inventory categories.
