FGX International said its sales of sunglasses and prescription frames rose 8% to $18.1 million, in the first quarter ended March 29.

All other segments at the company, which also makes non-prescription reading glasses and costume jewelry, reported lower sales.

The company attributed the increase in sales in the sunglasses and prescription frame segment to new product launches and increased sales volume at two major customers. FGXI sunglass brands include Foster Grant, Anarchy, Body Glove, Champion, Gargoyles and Ironman.

FGXI said cost of goods declined for its non-prescription reading glass and sunglass segments during the quarter.

On April 14th, the company launched a multi-million dollar television advertising campaign supporting the Foster Grant sunglasses brand. The campaign is expected to run for 12 weeks.

“We are pleased to be back on television again this year advertising Foster Grant sunglasses,” said CEO Alec Taylor. “More than ever, we are committed to building the equities of our brands, which excites our retail partners and speaks to our leadership position in the over-the-counter reading glasses and mass sunglasses categories.”

The company said 215 Paradies airport gift shops began selling its sunglasses during the quarter.
