The Labor Department reported Friday that nonfarm payrolls fell by 140,000 amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expected to see a gain of 50,000.
The month marked the first decline in payrolls in eight months.
The unemployment rate, which is calculated from a different survey, held steady at 6.7 percent, the Labor Department said.
