Nike inked a long-term deal with Chelsea Football Club, which now stands as the largest commercial deal in the club’s history.
The new technical partnership with Nike makes the swoosh the official kit supplier beginning in the 2017/18 season. Nike will replace Adidas, which began working with the club in 2006.
Nike will produce strips for the first team, Academy and Ladiesteams, as well as a full range of clothing for Chelsea’s millions of supporters around the world.
“This is an incredibly exciting and important deal for the club. Like Chelsea, Nike is known around the world for its excellence and innovation and we look forward to working together in what is sure to be a successful partnership,” said Chelsea Director Marina Granovskaia. “We believe Nike will be able to support our growth into new markets as well as helping us maintain our place among the world’s elite football clubs.”
Trevor Edwards, president of the Nike Brand, added, “Chelsea is a world-class club with a rich tradition and passionate fans across the globe. The partnership with Chelsea reinforces our leadership position in football. We are excited to help grow the club’s global reach, serving players and supporters with Nike innovation and design.”
According to reports, Manchester United still has the richest contract in the English Premier League with a £75 million-a-year deal with Adidas. Puma is distant third with its Arsenal deal at $30 million per year, with New Balance’s deal with Liverpool close behind at 28 million.
After losing Manchester United, Chelsea will be only Nike’s second Premier League team, joining Manchester City.
Nike’s other big football team deals include Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Spanish giants Barcelona are said to receive £120-million-a-year from the extension of their agreement with Nike. Nike also sponsors the United States, Brazilian, French and England national sides as well as Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo.
