The third annual outdoor industry hockey tournament for The Conservation Alliance has a new name and an entire country behind it: The Canadian Cup, hosted by Arc’teryx, Baffin and Canada Goose, will bring leading industry brands together again to test their hockey skills at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market’s Industry Party on Jan. 19.

The event will raise nearly $10,000 for support of The Conservation Alliance. The 2012 tournament roster features Arc’teryx, Baffin, Camelbak, Canada Goose, Eddie Bauer, Icebreaker, Nikwax, Prana, PrimaLoft, Outdoor Industry Association, Outdoor Retailer, Yukon Charlie’s, Woolrich, and Rogers Corporation. Teams will compete in custom-made uniforms in the sudden death tournament, which will also include an “All Star” game, pitting the U.S. players against the Canucks.

“The Canadian Cup for The Conservation Alliance comes to OR with the same guarantee for a great night of fun among the outdoor industry’s strong community, all in support of such an important cause to both our countries,” said Kevin Spreekmeester, vice president of global marketing for Canada Goose. “With this event, we have been able to bring Canadians’ deep love for hockey to Salt Lake. We’re finding there are plenty of American players here that also love to get their game on at the Salt Palace.

The 14 participating teams will play single elimination, 10-minute games in the tournament followed by a new competition for the event, an All-Star Game. The All-Star Game will consist of members from each of the American teams playing in an all-out battle against a team composed of all Canadian players.

“We’re fired up for the Canadian Cup, and are thrilled that more Canadian brands have stepped up as sponsors,” said John Sterling, executive director of The Conservation Alliance. “It’s become a great tradition at the Winter OR Show to watch our friends put their hockey skills to the test and celebrate the conservation work we do throughout the year. With three Canadian sponsors – Canada Goose, Arc’teryx and Baffin – we also have the opportunity to build our profile in Canada.”

“The Conservation Alliance has been a key influence in keeping Canadian wildernesses intact,” said Tom Duguid, director of brand marketing for Arc’teryx. “Creating a hockey tournament to aid their objective is the right thing to do, especially if you’re from north of the 49th.”

The Canadian Cup for The Conservation Alliance raises funds to support The Conservation Alliance’s efforts to protect wild places throughout North America. Since its inception in 1989, the Alliance has contributed nearly $9.5 million to grassroots environmental groups.

“Baffin is proud to be associated with a great OR event that supports The Conservation Alliance,” said Baffin President Paul Hubner. “What could be better than running around pretending to be Wayne Gretzky, while at the same time doing something positive for our planet? Hmmm, how about doing it at a party with cold beer?”
