A small shoe factory just outside the capital of Cambodia collapsed last Thursday, killing at least two workers. The factory was making Asics sneakers at the time.

About 50 workers were inside a workroom of the factory south of Phnom Penh when steel beams holding up a concrete-floored storage area the ceiling caved in. Nine other workers were injured, including three still in serious condition by late last week, according to reports.

The factory, called Wing Star Shoes, had been making shoes for Asics at the time.

Masayo Hasegawa, an Asics spokesperson, confirmed to the Associated Press that the factory was in contract to make Asics running shoes, and said officials are looking into the situation.

We understand that some people have died, so first we offer our condolences, Hasegawa said from Tokyo. We want the highest priority to be placed on saving lives.

The collapse came after the collapse of an apparel factory in April 24 in Bangladesh killed at least 1,127 people, leading to an outcry for Western retailers and brands to do more to ensure the safety of those who make their products
