DestiMetrics confirmed lodging occupancy and revenue at western mountain destinations its tracks set a third consecutive record in August and bookings for September and October continued apace.

As of Aug. 31, summer figures that combine actual occupancy for May-August and on-the-books reservations for the next two months are 103 percent of last year’s summer total and revenues are up 11 percent. September bookings are contributing significantly to the tally with occupancy up 17.5 percent and revenues up a robust 26.3 percent. Data is collected from lodging properties at 19 western mountain destination resorts* in six states.

Summer’s record-setting streak is also carrying some early momentum into the 2015-16 ski season as winter bookings are starting to ramp up. Although it is still early, the preliminary data as of Aug. 31 looks promising with aggregated on-the-books occupancy for the upcoming winter for November through April up four percent compared to the same time last year. Aggregated revenues for the entire six months of the winter season are up 9.4 percent.

“October 31 marks the official end of summer, so the season still has some time to go, but with both September and October pacing dramatically ahead of last year, the final outcome will grow even more impressively before we cross the finish line,” says Ralf Garrison, director of DestiMetrics.  “We’re heading into the prime winter booking season riding the wave of our third consecutive record summer with some expectation that momentum will carry into ski season,” he added.

The monthly Mountain Market Briefing released to participating destinations conveyed both optimistic and cautionary information. Garrison pointed out that “geopolitical forces and global economic volatility may bring hesitancy to less-committed winter vacationers and we will be monitoring those indicators and consumer’s response closely.”

Consumer confidence strengthening

On the economic front, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) rebounded strongly from July with an 11.5 percent increase that moved the Index above the important 100-point threshold for only the third time in 2015. The National Unemployment Rate declined from 5.3 to 5.1 percent assisted by the creation of 173,000 new jobs. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) had a volatile ride in August and ended the month down 6.6 percent after Chinese markets tumbled. The drop resulted in the first year-over-year decline in the DJIA since 2012.

“Consumers felt better about both the short- and long-term prospects for the job market and were encouraged by increased earnings during August,” explained Tom Foley, operations director for DestiMetrics. “Although markets have stabilized somewhat, the instability in the Chinese market that created a global sell off could still potentially decrease consumer confidence and spending as we head into the prime winter booking season,” cautioned Foley.

The figures announced in the Briefing indicate that the highly sought after destination guest that books earlier, stays longer, and spends more money is already making winter reservations as indicated by the booking pace moving ahead of last year.

“We expect room rates will be strategic in many destinations as resorts bump up against capacity during peak periods since lodging inventory is currently experiencing limited growth,” observed Garrison.  “But between the uncertainties of snowfall and current economic fluctuations, challenges and opportunities may come in equal measure and appear quickly with the potential to define the season’s dynamics in a relatively short period of time.”
