Burton Snowboards elevated its partnership with Protect Our Winter to the elite level by donating $50,000 in cash to the non-profit, which has been a vocal advocate for the snow sports industry on such topics as climate change and global warming.
Burton and Protect Our Winters have worked together since 2011, mainly focusing on building awareness across the snow sports community and leveraging the voices of Burton’s pro athletes on climate legislation. Representatives from Burton, including CEO (and POW Board member) Donna Carpenter and athletes such as Danny Davis, Kelly Clark and Kimmy Fasani have joined POW in Washington for
in-person meetings on Capitol Hill and at the EPA to discuss the impacts of climate change on the snow sports industry and support climate programs such as the Clean Power Plan.
“Burton has a strong connection to the environment because we started in the mountains, and our lifestyle is all about the outdoors, whether we’re chasing snow or hiking and camping in the summer,” says Burton CEO Donna Carpenter. “We’re proud to support POW because we believe we share a responsibility to preserve the lifestyle we love and promote. Through POW, we can help advocate for polices that focus on protecting our winters and reducing the impact of climate change.”
“We’re truly honored and thankful to Burton for their generous support of Protect Our Winters. As the most legendary brand in snowboarding, Burton has the ability to help us build social movement against climate change? we need now,” said POW’s Executive Director, Chris Steinkamp. “Burton has been a big part of POW for a long time and a powerful voice in our advocacy work, so we truly appreciate their generosity and providing us the resources to become even more impactful this year.”
This year’s contribution also coincides with Burton’s launch of its new sustainability video, which showcases Burton’s commitment to making the brand as respected for its environmental and social impact as it is for its products. From factory audits that ensure manufacturers meet high environmental and human rights standards, to working with organizations like bluesign and FSC to manage the footprint its products leave behind, Burton is helping lead the industry forward.
Protect Our Winters is the environmental center point of the winter sports community, united towards a common goal of reducing climate change’s effects on our sport and local mountain communities. With over 100,000 supporters worldwide, POW re-invests contributions in educational initiatives, advocacy and community-based programs. For more information, visit protectourwinters.org
