Black Diamond Equipment Ltd. said it completed a substantial 11,000-foot remodel of its Salt Lake City facility, which includes many energy-saving materials, a major ERP software system upgrade and custom hot forging machinery inside its international HQ.

Additionally, the maker of climbing and skiing equipment said it built its own nitrogen creation system to power laser cutting. Not only does this system eliminate costly delivery of nitrogen but is more environmentally friendly, the company said. At BD Asia in Zhuhai, China, the completion of the final phase of the Distribution Center is coupled with the continued investment in machines such as a new state-of-the-art CTM (carabiner testing machine) that is linked via Internet to SLC, and ground-breaking work on China’s first closed-loop anodization system.

“The difficult economy only underscores the need for proactive management maximizing efficiency,” explains Peter Metcalf Black Diamond CEO. “In celebrating our 20th Anniversary this summer, we are focused not on looking back but rather forward and meeting the ever changing needs of our retailers and consumers.

“As we move forward we are as committed as ever to the sports of rock climbing, skiing and alpinism,” continues Metcalf. “The global recession has taught us that hoping for better days is not a management strategy, rather we will continue to innovate and refine our own systems to best offer great products in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”
