A bipartisan group of senators on Thursday introduced new legislation that enhances state compliance and accuracy of existing background check systems in place for firearm purchases.
The bill ensures federal and state authorities accurately report relevant information, including criminal history, to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
“For years, agencies and states haven’t complied with the law, failing to upload these critical records without consequence,” Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate, said in a statement.
The bipartisan bill, co-authored by South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott and Connecticut Democrat Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, comes 11 days after the November 5 mass shooting that left 26 dead in a Sutherland Springs church.
