Adidas is scheduled to hold the grand opening ceremony for a new 1.9 million-square-foot distribution center in Spartanburg, S.C. today at 11 am.

Gov. Mark Sanford is expected to be in attendance at the event, when adidas could disclose that it plans to hire another 130 employees for the facility, which already employs 1,500.

The facility contains separate warehouses for the adidas and Reebok brands and is designed to hold up to 15 million pieces of apparel, footwear, equipment and accessories.

The DC is the latest example of a massive influx of German investment into the upstate that was spurred with BMW’s construction of a plant in nearby Greer in the early 1990s. Other European companies with a major presence in the area include France’s Michelin and a host of automotive suppliers.
