Last night, Adidas Originals hosted a kickoff event at its Tubular Pop-Up Gallery locatedin SOHO, New York, featuring a performance by celebrated hip-hop artist, Future. Officially opening to the public on Thursday, the temporary gallery – an exhibition and retail space in one – will showcase both Fall/Winter 2015 and Spring/Summer 2016 iterations of the Tubular sneaker, a footwear model that takes direct inspiration from early 90s Adidas running technology. The venue-to remain open throughout much of New York Fashion Week-will highlight the Tubular's futuristic aesthetic, through unique installations that are as innovative as the sneaker's directional, design identity.
Created by the Adidas design team directed by Nic Galway, vice President of Global Design at Adidas Originals, the Tubular sneaker style belongs to a new generation of radical footwear, offering a contemporary take on a classic Adidas shape from the archives – the Adidas Tubular 93. Focusing on this shoe's unique, tube-derived sole detail, the showcased silhouettes pay homage to the Adidas archived style while simultaneously subverting, updating and abstracting them to meet 21st century needs.
The results of the team's work were fittingly, first unveiled earlier this year during Paris Men's Fashion Week, with an on-model performance that combined elements of dance, climbing and vaulting. In follow up, the New York City Tubular Pop-Up Gallery will showcase the sneaker's modern aesthetic during an international Fashion Week, showcasing the shoes as the unique design objects they are. As part of this experience, the dedicated pop-up location will grant guests a closer look at the forthcoming models in a multi-media environment that unites photography, installation elements, and even limited-edition Tubular styles available for purchase, all in one space. Featured styles to be exhibited throughout the week include: Tubular runner, Tubular X, Tubular Nova, Tubular Defiant and Tubular Doom.
“The series of fashion shows, events and other activations staged during Fashion Weeks across the globe offer a glimpse of the future in terms of design and aesthetic” offers Pascha Naderi-Nejad, Senior Director of Adidas Originals, U.S. “To have the Tubular Pop-Up Gallery space open to the public, on the first day of New York Fashion week is an exciting step forward for Adidas Originals. This venue provides the perfect forum to spotlight the silhouette's unique sensibility and superior craftsmanship in a new, interesting way, at exactly the right time.”
With its monochromatic color palette, highly visual EVA sole unit and modernist silhouette, the Tubular concept reinforces Adidas Originals' dedication to push the boundaries of traditional footwear design. It is also the latest in a long line of footwear innovations to have Galway's design imprint, following the successful launches of several collaboratively designed Adidas styles with Stella McCartney, Yohji Yamamoto (through Y-3) and Rick Owens, as well as other celebrated Adidas footwear models, such as Pure Boost and the Y-3 Qasa.
Given this lineage, Tubular's ongoing infiltration of global Fashion Weeks-showing up via disruptive and innovative means-seems all the more appropriate.
To help mark the New York edition of this series, a special, New York City specific Tubular model will be sold exclusively out of the Tubular Pop-Up Gallery space when doors open on Thursday September 10th. The NYC-centric Tubular Runner Primeknit combines two of Adidas' most innovative technologies in use today: the brand's visually impactive Tubular sole with the comfort and superior breathability of an upper crafted from Adidas' superior Primeknit construction. Both colorful and tactile, this highly collectible model will retail for: $150.
The following day on September 11th, limited quantities of a special edition, white TUBULAR X PRIMEKNIT SNAKE will be made available for purchase for a retail price of $160.
Using the Tubular as the inspiration and center piece of their photographs, artists Brian Alcazar, Humza Deaz, Christina Paik, VisualsbyPierre, Brock Fetch and Natalia Mantini have captured the clean visual reference and progressive craftsmanship of the Tubular through each of their vantage points for a dynamic gallery show and photographic series also within the space.
Located at 115 Spring Street, in SOHO the Adidas Originals Tubular Pop-Up Gallery will be open to the public September 10-12, 10 a.m.-5p.m EST.
