Adidas AG is closing its stores in Russia and suspending its online shop, joining Nike, Puma and a wide range of Western businesses that have halted operations in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
Adidas said it would suspend operations in Russia until further notice but would continue to pay its employees. Last week, Adidas suspended its partnership with the Russian Football Union following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“As a company, we strongly condemn any form of violence and stand in solidarity with those calling for peace,” an Adidas spokeswoman said Tuesday, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In 2020, Adidas had sales of €584 million ($651 million) in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, equivalent to 2.9 percent of its sales.
Adidas is also donating €1 million, or $1.1 million, to refugee and children’s charities affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has donated apparel to the Global Aid Network to support those impacted by the war.
