adidas has reportedly brought in Martin Brewer, the companys former head of global sports marketing, to replace the departing Kevin Wulff to run sports marketing for adidas America. The move is expected to take place November 1. Brewer, who left adidas in 2000, has been consulting for the last four years.
The move is seen as the latest move to refine the U.S. and global marketing teams under Erich Stamminger, who was appointed CEO of Adidas America last fall in addition to his role as head of global marketing.
Wulff, who has been with the company for only 18 months, said he is leaving for personal reasons according to a report in Sports Business Journal. Wulff is expected to stay on as a consultant after November.
While Nike and Reebok have seemingly backed off much of the current class of NBA rookies, adidas has been on a spending spree in the category for both rookie and veteran players, adding to a roster heavy with marquee players Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady.
Last week, adidas inked Dwight Howard, taken number one overall by the Orlando Magic.
adidas over the last few months has signed Sebastian Telfair, who was taken number 13 by the Trail Blazers, Josh Smith, taken #17 by Atlanta, and J.R. Smith, who was picked by the Hornets with the 18th pick.
Nike has only signed one player out of the 2004 rookie class, inking the Bulls Ben Gordon, while Reebok picked up the Clippers Shaun Livingston.
adidas also announced last week they had signed a multi-year deal with Detroit Piston's guard Chauncey Billups, who was drafted by the Boston Celtics number three overall in the 1997 NBA Draft.
David Bond, director of basketball at adidas, was having a little fun with the latest announcements along with news they had inked a deal with Indiana University. He told the local Business Journal that the Billups and Indiana deals would be less that the $90 million Nike is reportedly paying LeBron James.
