Montrail is reporting a solid first quarter, with sales increasing 33%, the best quarter the company has seen since its inception in 1993. The performance was attributed to strong sell-through, the renewed European expansion and new products – especially the expansion into the climbing shoe market.

BOSS spoke with Montrail’s CEO Menno van Wyk, who said that retailers have been seeing strong sell through across the board, not just in Montrail product. Outdoor recreation seems to be gaining some of its luster again.

Last year, many retailers and vendors were saying that flat was the new up. This year, several companies – including industry giants like The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, and L.L. Bean, and even smaller vendors like Mammut and Deuter – are reporting double-digit sales increases and a healthy retail environment.

Scott Tucker, Montrail’s president said, “Our dealers are telling us that spring has been good… Also, our receivables are in good shape, which is a good indicator of a healthy retail climate.”
