Field & Stream, a hunting and fishing specialty chain launched by Dick's Sporting Goods last year, is considering opening stores in suburbs of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, according to separate news reports.
The newspaper site Altoonamirror.com reported the retailer wants to build a Field & Stream in Allegheny Township, due east from its first store, which opened in August, 2013 in a northern suburb of Pittsburgh. Dick's SG is headuqartered in Pittsburgh.
Representatives from Field & Stream have told the Allegheny Township board of supersvisors for the retailer wants to build a 52,100-square-foot store on the site of a former Circuit City.
Field & Stream has also told officials in Miami Township, OH north of Cincinnati that it is interested in building a 50,000-square-foot store at a development called Austin Landing near Interstate 75.
Field & Stream opened its first store in August, 2013 in Cranberry Township, PA due north of Pittsburgh, where Dick's is headquartered. Allegheny Township is northeast of the city.
Field & Stream opened its second store in Crescent City, KY in November and has announced plans to erect another store at the site of a demolished Walmart in Big Flats, NY, west of Elmira.
Dick's Sporting Goods decided to launch the specialty store concept after finding only 6 to 8 percent of core hunters were shopping at Dick's stores. Despite continued expansion by Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain, Sportsman's Warehouse and Cabela's, Dick's CEO Ed Stack has said he sees plenty of places Field & Stream can succeed.
