The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) clarified that its July 16, 2013 statement suggesting that the use of certain aftermarket helmet add-on products may void helmet certifications does not apply to products that don't permanently attach to a helmet.
NOCSAE issue the clarification to avoid potential confusion at the request of Unequal Technologies, which makes a variety of supplemental head protection products for team sports.
NOCSAE general counsel Mike Oliver confirmed that because Unequal supplemental head padding in a helmet is not intended to, and does not, permanently attach to the helmet, the use of Unequal product will not void a helmet's certification.
“Unequal appreciates NOCSAE's governing role in overseeing equipment standards and supports its mission to enhance athlete safety,” said Rob Vito, CEO of Unequal.
