In light of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing, Nike postponed a press announcement that had been planned Tuesday at its Nike Flatiron store in New York City. In an e-mail to media members, Nike also indicated that it had confirmed that nearly all Nike and Converse employees as well as its sponsored athletes in the Boston area had been accounted for.
Nike’s e-mail read, “Nike is deeply saddened by today’s events at the Boston Marathon and our sympathies go out to those impacted. We can confirm that nearly all Nike, Inc. employees which include Converse and our athletes have been accounted for. As everyone is aware, cell phone service, travel and communications within the city of Boston have been challenging and are delaying our ability to access some of our employees immediately.”
Nike had planned to announce its support for restoring access to physical activity and facilities in some of the New York and New Jersey public schools most-affected by Hurricane Sandy. The New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis; U.S. national team star midfielder Carli Lloyd, and tennis legend John McEnroe were set to join company officials at the event to be held at its store at 20th and 5th Ave.
