Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. reported net sales for the five-week period ending January 3, 2003, of $31.584 billion, an increase of 9.5 percent over the $28.844 billion in the similar period in the prior year.

Sales for the forty- eight week period were $227.058 billion, an increase of 11.5 percent over the $203.661 billion in the similar period in the prior year.

The Wal-Mart division’s sales for the five-week period were $20.127 billion, up 11.0 percent over sales of $18.134 billion in the similar prior-year period. The division’s sales for the forty-eight weeks of $146.104 billion were up 13.0 percent over the $129.352 billion in the similar prior-year period.

SAM’s CLUB sales for the five-week period were $3.747 billion, up 2.6 percent over sales of $3.651 billion in the similar prior-year period. Club sales for the forty-eight weeks of $29.372 billion were up 7.8 percent over the $27.257 billion in the similar prior-year period.

The International division’s sales for the five-week period were $5.537 billion, up 11.3 percent over sales of $4.977 billion in the similar prior-year period. The division’s sales for the forty-eight weeks of $38.021 billion were up 10.9 percent over the $34.298 billion in the similar prior-year period.

Comparable sales for the period ending January 3, 2003, were as follows:

As of December 31, 2002, the Company had 1,566 Wal-Mart stores, 1,244 Supercenters, 522 SAM’s CLUBS and 39 Neighborhood Markets in the United States. Internationally, the Company operated units in Argentina (11), Brazil (22), Canada (207), China (25), Germany (94), Korea (15), Mexico (595), Puerto Rico (52) and United Kingdom (258).

Wal-Mart also owns a 34% interest in Seiyu, Ltd. with options to purchase up to 66.7% of that company. Seiyu operates over 400 stores located throughout Japan.
