Volcom has sued Roc Nation, owned by entertainer Jay Z, for trademark infringement, claiming the inverted diamond logo it began using in 2009 is too similar to that used by the action sport brand.
In its lawsuit, Volcom argues it has spent more than $100 million marketing its “stone” logo since 1991. The suit alleges Roc Nation began using the logo in 2009 and has ignored Volcom's demands since then to stop using it on its line of records, head phones and other consumer products.
Roc Nation had been using a similar logo in combination with its name until 2009, when it dropped its name and began using the red logo exclusively.
Volcom's suit asks that Roc Nation immediately stop using the logo and destroy all product and marketing material using it.
