May marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and Mountain Hardwear is celebrating by launching its new Sunshield Series, designed to offer elevated protection during sunny outdoor activities. The brand is also introducing a new Broad Spectrum designation across select 2025 apparel styles, helping outdoor enthusiasts choose gear that defends against harmful ultraviolet rays.
In partnership with the Skin Cancer Foundation, Mountain Hardwear’s Broad Spectrum designation identifies apparel that provides protection against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Unlike sunscreen, Broad Spectrum clothing offers consistent, all-day protection that doesn’t wear off, providing reliable sun defense wear after wear.
The brand’s Broad Spectrum fabrics are tested to block 98 percent of both UVA and UVB rays, offering maximum protection against sunburn and premature aging.
“During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we want to emphasize and educate on the importance of effective sun protection, particularly in the mountains, where UV radiation increases with altitude,” said Matt Burbach, vice president of marketing at Mountain Hardwear. “Our Broad Spectrum designation, in partnership with the Skin Cancer Foundation, offers that peace of mind, allowing our customers to fully immerse themselves in their outdoor pursuits, knowing they are protected.”
The Broad Spectrum designation will appear on several of Mountain Hardwear’s trusted apparel lines in 2025. These include:
-
Sunshield Series: Lightweight and stretchy, this line offers sun and odor protection for all-day wear.
-
Crater Lake Series: Known for its ultra-soft, breathable fabric and new plant-based odor control.
-
Trail Sender Series: Built with durable, 100 percent recycled stretch fabric for maximum mobility and minimal weight.
-
Stryder Series: Offers wind and sun protection with water-resistant recycled nylon, ideal for trail and camp.
-
Canyon Series: Features airy, moisture-wicking fabric that stays cool and resists wrinkles, even in hot weather.
Mountain Hardwear’s collaboration with the Skin Cancer Foundation highlights a shared commitment to sun safety. The Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation confirms that Broad Spectrum garments meet rigorous standards for effective sun protection.
“We are grateful for Mountain Hardwear’s support and their alignment with our mission to save and improve lives,” said Becky Kamowitz, executive director of the Skin Cancer Foundation. “The Foundation empowers people to take a proactive approach to daily sun protection and early detection and treatment of skin cancer. Corporate Council members like Mountain Hardwear help make our work possible.”
