Tennis Warehouse, the tennis retailer based in Luis Obispo, CA, reported that it recently acquired Swetka’s Tennis Shop in Mountain View, CA, a fixture in the Bay Area tennis community for over 50 years.
Alex and Sally Swetka opened the store in 1969 during the tennis boom, and it remains a family-run business operated by their son John, who has been running the store for the last several decades.
Since opening its doors, Swetka’s was named Specialty Retailer of the Year by RSI magazine and subsequently one of the Top 10 tennis shops in the country. The store’s employees have over 100 years of combined retail experience.
Drew Munster, CEO and founder of Tennis Warehouse, said, “Swetka’s has stood the test of time, and we have great respect for the way John has built a successful business. As we’ve seen recently in both the U.S. and abroad, a spend-and-hope strategy may appear as though it’s working until it falls apart. Swetka employs a core group of people who know what they’re doing and have been there for a long time. Like the sport of tennis itself, you have to come with solid fundamentals, and that’s what Swetka’s has always done.”
“Our operational strength paired with Swetka’s customer service is a winning combination,” said Rick Kerpsack, president of Tennis Warehouse. The 3,000-square-foot space will remain home to the same staff who have served local tennis enthusiasts for decades. With this expansion, customers can expect to find an even wider selection of tennis equipment in addition to pickleball gear and other growing categories.”
John Swetka added, “I look forward to teaming up with Tennis Warehouse and delivering the ultimate tennis retail experience to both our long-time devoted customers and new players taking up the game.”
With several retail stores in Australia, Tennis Warehouse reported that the transition with Swetka’s will be smooth as the company looks toward the future. Tennis Warehouse aims to preserve the core values and traditions of the original Swetka’s Tennis Shop while adding its products and expertise to the experience.
