Alterra Mountain Company named Matt Jones as the new president and COO of Stratton, the ski resort in Vermont, effective October 30, reporting to regional chief operating officer Patrice Malo.
In his new role, Jones is responsible for “overseeing operations and enhancing the employee and guest experience, continuing to build and strengthen community relationships and driving profitability” for the resort.
He comes to the role with 25 years of industry experience, most recently as the vice president and general manager of Kirkwood Mountain Resort in California. Previously, he held various positions at Vail Resorts, including a decade on the Vail Mountain senior leadership team as the director of human resources.
Before moving to Kirkwood, Jones oversaw Vail’s Colorado resorts and employee housing initiatives as vice president of human resources. Jones has also served on several boards, including the executive committee of the Ski California Board and chair of the Emergency Grants Committee for the Epic Promise Foundation serving employees of Vail Resorts.
“Matt prioritizes the value of strong resort and community relationships, making him an ideal fit to lead Stratton, a destination that is beloved by its employees and guests,” said Mark Brownlie, chief operating officer of the Alterra Mountain Company. “I look forward to having him on the Alterra leadership team, where he will be empowered to lead Stratton, build on its already rich employee culture, and enhance the guest experience.”
Stratton recently invested nearly $7 million for the 2023/24 winter season, with a reimagined beginner area and new RFID gates to ease access to all its major lift terminals.
“I have been in the ski industry for many years, and I am very excited to begin a new chapter at Stratton, where I will have the pleasure of helping continue its rich history and legacy that many before me have cultivated,” said Jones. “Alterra Mountain Company offers the opportunity to lean into what is best for the employees, community and guests, and I look forward to the many opportunities ahead.”
