The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) formed the Bicycle Industry E-Bike Safety & Standards Panel, a new initiative aimed at “fostering collaboration among industry experts to address critical safety and standard concerns related to lithium-ion batteries and e-mobility devices,” according to a release from NBDA.
The Bicycle Industry E-Bike Safety & Standards Panel quarterly platform will serve as a central hub for experts to discuss, share insights and formulate best practices to enhance safety and compliance across the e-bike market.
The Bicycle Industry E-Bike Safety & Standards Panel represents a “concerted effort by the NBDA to drive proactive measures within the industry, ensuring that safety remains at the forefront of e-mobility development and deployment. By bringing together experts from various sectors, the panel aims to address the diverse challenges associated with lithium-ion batteries and e-mobility devices, spanning crucial segments including codes, standards, certifications, importation, battery management, insurance coverage, supplier and retailer best practices, recycling, and consumer education.”
“Ensuring the safety and reliability of e-mobility devices, particularly lithium-ion batteries, is of paramount importance to the National Bicycle Dealers Association,” said Heather Mason, president of the NBDA. “The formation of the Bicycle Industry E-Bike Safety & Standards Panel underscores our commitment to creating a cohesive and collaborative environment for industry stakeholders to collectively address challenges, share insights, and establish comprehensive best practices. We believe that by uniting experts from various domains, we can drive positive change and elevate the standards of safety and compliance within the e-bike sector.”
The panel members, comprising industry leaders, engineers, scientists, manufacturers, retailers, and policymakers, will identify potential risks, concerns and opportunities related to e-mobility devices, encompassing shipping, receiving, storage, maintenance, charging, selling, and servicing of lithium-ion batteries, promoting safe practices and raising awareness about potential hazards.
The first quarterly meeting will be held on September 12. The NBDA encourages all industry stakeholders, including manufacturers, retailers, policymakers, and consumers, to engage with the Panel through attendance, submitting topics for discussion or requesting to join the panel as an expert.
