The Oregonian newspaper reported Monday that Columbia Sportswear trimmed headcount at its headquarters near Beaverton through layoffs and voluntary buyouts. The newspaper said company spokesman John Fread would not say how many workers took the buyout offer or were cut in the layoff other than to say the number was not substantial.

Fread told The Oregonian that Columbia's strategy to grow internationally accounted for most of the cuts, but acknowledged that the slow U.S. economy contirbuted to the decision.
