A survey from RetailMeNot found that Walmart is the most popular place to go back-to-school shopping this year, followed by Amazon and Target. Asked where they plan to do their back-to-school shopping (shoppers were allowed to choose more than one option), the top answers were:
- Walmart, 69 percent
- Amazon, 61 percent
- Target, 50 percent
- Old Navy, Gap, H&M, 29 percent
- Dollar stores, 27 percent
- Department stores, 21 percent
- Staples, 21 percent
- Kohl’s, 20 percent
- Warehouse clubs, 18 percent
- Best Buy, 17 percent.
The survey of 1,112 U.S. adults taken from April 9 to April 12 found 61 percent of shoppers said they would spend more on school supplies and back-to-school purchases this year, an average of $1,333 in total.
Other findings from the survey:
- More than half of respondents, 52 percent, said they would be doing their back-to-school shopping in-store this year; 48 percent said they would shop online. stick to online shopping.
- 66 percent of parents agreed that choosing the right tech for their child is as important as choosing other school supplies including backpacks and binders. The next biggest budget line items were school supplies, clothing and shoes.
- The biggest stressors respondents noted this year were purchasing everything on time and shopping safely amid COVID-19 health concerns, both tied at 30 percent of respondents; spending too much (28 percent); dealing with crowds (28 percent); and finding good deals (26 percent).
- 56 percent of parents said they were looking forward to the school year more than in the past, and 58 percent said this school year is a bigger deal than it normally is for their family.
