The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association released its 2007 Sports & Fitness Participation Report which is based on the new USA Sports Participation Study, a new collaborative effort between SGMA, Outdoor Industry Association, SnowSports Industries America, and the National Golf Foundation. The resulting new report now showcases
participation at the core level which focuses on those engaged in sports, fitness, and recreational activities on a regular or a frequent basis.
According to SGMAs findings, fitness activities and team sports have a very loyal legion of core participants. Of the 27 fitness activities listed in the study, core participants represent more than 50% of total participants in 16 of the activities. Of the 22 team sports in the report,
core participants represent more than 50% of total participants in nearly two-thirds of the sports covered.
The chart on page 5 outlines a number of key select sports and activities represented in the initial SGMA report that covers 86 sports in eight different categories. Each sport or activity lists Total Participants and the percent of those participants that are considered Frequent, Regular, or Casual participants. The Frequent and Regular groups are
considered the “Core” participant group.
