Outdoor Research entered into an exclusive partnership with Massif Mountain Gear Company to integrate Massifs proprietary Nomex 4-way stretch fabrics into a new line of high performance military-specific tactical handwear and headwear.
Until now, military personnel in the aviation, armored, infantry, and special forces communities have had to sacrifice comfort, durability, and performance in exchange for gear that would protect them from the threat of explosion and flash fire.
The new line of Outdoor Research gloves, neck gaiters, and balaclavas made from Massifs cutting-edge Nomex® fabrics puts an end to the need for compromise. These new items feature the same performance characteristics as their commercial counterparts including 4-way stretch, moisture wicking, breathability, water and wind resistance, fleece insulation, and enhanced durability, but also provide flame and arc protection. In addition, the new line will be available in a range of colors including the various service camouflage prints (UCP, MARPAT, Tiger, etc.). All products are made in the U.S. at ORs Seattle facilities and are 100% Berry Amendment Compliant.
Mike Christian, Director of Government Programs at Outdoor Research, says the companys decision to enter into this partnership was based on the unique niche filled by Massifs proprietary fabrics. “Many of our military customers have been asking for flame-resistant versions of our high-performance handwear and headwear due to the increased threat from enemy IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). In response to this request, we searched long and hard to find a line of flame-resistant fabrics that met our rigorous performance standards, and Massif was the only fabric supplier that fit the bill. This new line of Nomex® tactical gear will be the first of its kind available anywhere; it is designed to perform on military operations during every season, and in any climate on Earth.”
Chris Wasgatt, Chief Operating Officer for Massif, says that ORs sterling reputation for designing and manufacturing the highest quality gear was a major factor in forging the new relationship. “Virtually everyone who has an understanding of the key players in the outdoor apparel industry knows that Outdoor Research gloves and accessories are the most functional and durable on the market. In looking for a partner to round out our proven line of flame-resistant clothing with specialty handwear and headwear items, we are very pleased to count OR as our new strategic partner.”
Outdoor Research plans to launch the first products in the new line at the Salt Lake City-based Outdoor Retailer trade show in August 2006.
