Dick’s Sporting Goods is destroying the company’s inventory of unsold assault rifles in the wake of the decision to quit selling the firearms.

The rifles will be destroyed at the company’s distribution centers and then recycled.

“We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,” a spokeswoman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.”

Retailers typically return unsold merchandise to the manufacturer.

Dick’s pulled assault-style rifles from the company’s main stores in 2012 following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but the company began carrying them at Field & Stream locations. Along with AR-15 rifles and other similar weapons, Dick’s decided to stop selling high-capacity magazines.
