To benefit Thailand rock climbing communities impacted by the recent tsunami, the first-ever 24 Hours of Climbing fundraiser is set for April 22-23, 2005. The 24 hour event will involve two or four-member teams of friends,
colleagues and families raising donations through pledges for climbing the most vertical feet in a 24-hour period.

Hosted locally at the Vertical World climbing gym in Redmond, the 24 Hours of Climbing will include participation and support from businesses and
individuals throughout North America.

“Without a doubt, we were all deeply moved by the immense devastation of the tsunami. The loss to humanity is difficult, if not impossible, to comprehend,” said Blake Lewis of CreativethatCares, organizers of the 24
Hours of Climbing. “Not only do these communities need our thoughts and prayers, they also need money to help rebuild their lives.”

The limestone cliffs of Thailand have grown to become a legendary destination for the international climbing community. The combination of warm sands, swaying palms, a turquoise sea, and some of the best limestone climbing in the world has made Thailand the ideal climbing backdrop.

In December, the tsunami ravaged these spectacular climbing areas, taking an immense human toll. Many of the residents lost their homes, family members and businesses.

“These families welcomed climbers from all parts of the globe and accepted us as part of their community. We feel it is important that we give something back in this time of crisis and help them rebuild,” said Lewis.

Lewis said the fundraiser would support the extended Thai rock climbing community, providing as much assistance as possible. Donations raised during the “24 Hours of Climbing” will be dispersed through
hands-on, direct-aid groups including Rally for Railay, Phi Phi Releve-Toi, and Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs.

“Weve had great response from the climbing and outdoor industry in showing their support for this grassroots effort,” said Devon Uderitz, event co-organizer. “We are open and encourage all to participate in person or in spirit with a donation.”
